Nhất Nam
Nhất Nam is a martial art originating from Vietnam, formalised in Hanoi from 1983 onwards by Ngô Xuân Bính.〔"(Martial arts maketh the man )", ''Viet Nam News'', Jan. 22, 2012.〕
The name Nhất Nam derives from Sino-Vietnamese characters from "One Vietnam" (), and is to be distinguished from Nhật Nam ("Sun South" ), the Vietnamese name for the ancient Chinese Rinan Han commandery in northern Vietnam. The "One" expresses the "unification" of features of Vietnamese martial arts.〔 Đào Trung Hiếu, "(Giáo sư, Viện sĩ, Võ sư chưởng môn Ngô Xuân Bính )" April 23, 2011 "Ở tuổi 24, võ sư chưởng môn Ngô Xuân Bính đã làm được điều phi thường: thống nhất các gia phái, hệ phái võ “ Hét” vùng Thanh Nghệ thành môn phái võ “Nhất Nam” (cái tên với ý quy tụ bầu đoàn võ cổ miền bắc trung bộ, thành một điểm võ riêng dưới trời Nam, là một đứa con của làng võ Việt Nam)."〕 Ngô Xuân Bính formalised these features in his book on the basics of this unified approach in ''“Nhất Nam căn bản”'' Volumes 1 and 2, ("Basic Nhất Nam," ''căn bản'' means "basic.")
According to the English Nhất-Nam Federation's website "Nhất-Nam was mentioned for the first time in sources dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries."〔"(History of Nhất-Nam )", www.nhat-nam.co.uk.〕 However Vietnamese sources generally refer that the techniques were recorded centuries earlier, but the specific "One-Nam" name dates the art to 1983.
